It used to be simpler; you had to pay a single entry fee and then Huayna Picchu separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, each circuit has variants that may include access to mountains such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. It&#039;s the perfect base before the climb, where you can eat in one of its many restaurants, find accommodation, enjoy the hot springs, rest, or take a stroll. It&#039;s very pretty, and I recommend spending at least a couple of nights here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So taking as a starting point <strong>Cuzco<\/strong>There are several options for reaching the ancient Inca citadel. Bus to Ollantaytambo + Bus to km 82 + Trekking (cheaper)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This option involves taking a <strong>bus leaving from Cusco to the town of Ollantaytambo<\/strong> (2 hours approx.). Then take another <strong>bus to km 82 of route 288<\/strong> (approx. 30 min). From there <strong>walk towards Aguas Calientes for 6\/7 hours<\/strong>. approximately along the train tracks. I don&#039;t remember the price of the buses, but it was the cheapest option of all. But don&#039;t be overconfident, as buses from Ollantaytambo sometimes don&#039;t run or aren&#039;t on schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Estimated travel time: 9.30 hours and a lot of walking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Bus_a_Santa_Maria_Bus_a_Santa_Teresa_Bus_a_Hidroelectrica_Trekking\"><\/span>2. Bus to Santa Mar\u00eda + Bus to Santa Teresa + Bus to Hidroelectrica + Trekking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In this alternative, we will take a <strong>bus to the town of Santa Mar\u00eda<\/strong> (5\/6 hours approx.). From there another <strong>bus to Santa Teresa<\/strong> (1 hour), and finally another <strong>bus to Hidroel\u00e9ctrica (30 min)<\/strong>They say there may be buses connecting Santa Mar\u00eda with Hidroel\u00e9ctrica, too, in case you want to avoid going to Santa Teresa. From Hidroel\u00e9ctrica, you have to walk along the train tracks for two to three hours until you reach the town of Aguas Calientes. I don&#039;t remember the price of the buses, but they were also very affordable. The downside to this option is that with so many buses and transfers, the wait can be very long. There&#039;s no guarantee of when they&#039;ll arrive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to avoid walking the 2\/3 hours from Hidroel\u00e9ctrica, the train that goes along the same tracks we have to go around usually stops at that station, but the trip is usually quite expensive (approximately USD 25).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Estimated travel time: 9.30 hours without walking too much but not including the hours of waiting for buses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/mapa_machu-2.jpg\" alt=\"Camino siguiendo la Opci\u00f3n 2\" class=\"wp-image-40721\" style=\"object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/mapa_machu-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/mapa_machu-2-567x400.jpg 567w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Path following Option 2<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Minivan_a_Hidroelectrica_Trekking_la_que_elegi_yo\"><\/span>3. Minivan to Hydroelectric + Trekking (the one I chose)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most popular option among backpackers. Daily minivans depart from Cusco directly to Hidroel\u00e9ctrica (approximately 6:30 a.m.). From there, as with the previous option, you have to walk for two to three hours along the train tracks toward the town of Aguas Calientes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is usually more expensive than options 1 and 2, but you are guaranteed to arrive at a certain time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Estimated travel time: 9.30 hours taking a single transport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/mapa_machu1.jpg\" alt=\"Camino siguiendo la Opci\u00f3n 3\" class=\"wp-image-40720\" style=\"object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/mapa_machu1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/mapa_machu1-567x400.jpg 567w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Path following Option 3<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Camino_del_Inca\"><\/span>4. Inca Trail<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the most famous and iconic trekking route to Machu Picchu. It follows sections of the ancient Qhapaq \u00d1an, the Inca trail system, and passes through archaeological ruins, mountains, cloud forests, and highland jungle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Duration:<\/strong> 4 days \/ 3 nights (2-day short version also available)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Distance:<\/strong> 42 km approx.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maximum height:<\/strong> 4,215 m (Abra Warmiwa\u00f1usca or \u201cDead Woman\u2019s Pass\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Difficulty level:<\/strong> Moderate-high<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strong point:<\/strong> You arrive at Machu Picchu <strong>through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku)<\/strong> at dawn, an epic entrance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Requires <strong>reserve months in advance<\/strong>. Limited places per day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can only be done with an authorized agency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Salkantay_Trek\"><\/span>5. Salkantay Trek<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A wilder and less regulated alternative to the Inca Trail. It crosses breathtaking landscapes, such as the Salkantay Glacier, turquoise lagoons, and jungle areas. It doesn&#039;t follow Inca trails but offers incredible views and a more adventurous vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Duration:<\/strong> 5 days \/ 4 nights (although there are variations)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Distance:<\/strong> 72 km approx.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maximum height:<\/strong> 4,650 m (Salkantay Pass)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Difficulty level:<\/strong> High<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strong point:<\/strong> Diversity of landscapes, fewer tourists, and more contact with nature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No official permits are required; you can do it with or without an agency (although it&#039;s advisable to go with a guide if you don&#039;t have experience at altitude).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Tren_Turistico_hasta_Aguas_Calientes\"><\/span>6. Tourist Train to Aguas Calientes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The most comfortable and fastest option is to take the tourist train operated by <a aria-label=\"Peru Rail (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.perurail.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Per\u00fa Rail<\/a> or <a aria-label=\"Inca Rail (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/incarail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inca Rail<\/a>. Trains depart from <strong>Cusco (approx. 6 hours) and Ollantaytambo (approx. 2 hours)<\/strong>. The price is clearly high. But generally speaking, the ones I mentioned are the most well-known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I opted for the third option, which would involve getting to Hidroel\u00e9ctrica via minivans. This is because there are usually many people in the same situation as us, and if we arrive late, we might have trouble finding a seat, even if we&#039;ve paid for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Comienzo_del_viaje\"><\/span>Beginning of the journey<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The van picked me up from the hostel around 6:30 a.m. They repeated the same process with each passenger until all the seats were filled, and then the journey began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the nearly seven-hour drive, the landscape of the Sacred Valley unfolded before us. They usually make one or two stops along the way to stretch their legs, use the bathroom, and eat if desired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We arrived at Hidroel\u00e9ctrica around 2:00 p.m. The place itself doesn't offer much: it's basically a station next to the (now disused) power plant and a few food stalls where you can have lunch or buy supplies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The train to Aguas Calientes also departs from here, an alternative for those who prefer to avoid the hours of walking. You just have to keep following the tracks at all times (be careful when the train passes :D). We definitely have to stop by here if we want to go to Machu Picchu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we arrive, the main thing is to find accommodation, if we haven&#039;t already booked it. In my case, I didn&#039;t have any, so I started walking through the picturesque streets, asking for prices at every hostel I found. You can get good prices by comparing prices. I stayed at the Hostal Qoyllor for 25 soles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#039;s a wide variety of restaurants, bars, and bowling alleys. There&#039;s a campsite, hot springs to relax your muscles after all that traveling, clothing stores, craft shops, and a little bit of everything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I liked the vibe of the place. Today marks the best part and the reason we&#039;re here. To reach Machu Picchu, you must first begin the climb from Aguas Calientes to the long-awaited Inca citadel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 2 ways to go up: on foot (free) or by bus (paid).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>On foot:<\/strong> This involves walking up a well-guided path with large steps from the village to the ruins. This section can take between 1 and 2 hours, depending on your fitness level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>By bus:<\/strong> If you don't feel like or can't walk, there is a very frequent bus service that leaves from the town center of Aguas Calientes to the entrance of the resort. The well-maintained route leads you right up the hill. However, there are usually long lines to get on the buses, but they definitely go faster than walking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When we reach the end of the trail, the first thing we encounter is a long line of people. There it was, the Inca citadel, shrouded in mist, as if it still refused to fully reveal itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those mists and clouds that constantly threaten to cover the surrounding ruins and mountains. If you have a sunny or clear day, congratulations, you&#039;re in luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I stepped away from the crowds and cameras to sit for a while in silence, unhurried, just to absorb it. I thought about the Incas, the roads they built, everything left behind and everything that has stood the test of time (although you can see it in some buildings that have been renovated). <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1300\" height=\"908\" How clever must the Incas have been to build this entire citadel on a mountain? Just looking at what they built in such a challenging environment is enough to make you awestruck by its grandeur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The added bonus is the setting where it was built. That valley, surrounded by mountains, conveys a sense of serenity and spirituality that I didn&#039;t experience in the other buildings.
