I'd seen it a thousand times in photos, documentaries, and travelogues, and it always built up enormous expectations. But at the same time, I couldn't help but have some doubts: Isn't it one of those destinations that promises a lot and then feels a bit overrated?

With that mixture of excitement and skepticism, I embarked on the journey to Merzouga from Fez, wondering if I would truly live up to expectations. Because imagining the desert is one thing, but actually being there is quite another.

In this post I'm going to tell you exactly that: what it feels like to explore the Sahara from Merzouga, what it's like to stand in front of the Erg Chebbi dunes, and what you can really expect from the experience.

I'll also show you what the route is like to get there, what kind of excursions are available, and whether the world's most famous desert actually lives up to all its promises.

<img It illuminated the entire desert with a ghostly, almost magical clarity.

On one hand, it was beautiful to see the shadows on the dunes, to walk without a flashlight, and to feel that everything was bathed in a silvery light. But on the other hand, the light was so intense that it obscured the starry sky I had so longed to see. There was no Milky Way, no bright constellations, no infinite blackness of the cosmos.

Likewise, that moment is etched in my memory. Most travelers arrive from Marrakech or Fez on multi-day organized tours, by rental car, or by combining a bus to Erfoud or Rissani with a taxi.

What is the best way to visit the desert?

The most common way to experience the dunes is to take a day trip to Erg Chebbi, which usually includes a camel or 4x4 transfer, an overnight stay in a camp, dinner, and the classic sunrise in the desert. It's also possible to stay in Merzouga and arrange shorter visits independently.

How many days do I need?

Ideally, you should dedicate at least two nights to avoid feeling rushed. One night to arrive in Merzouga at a relaxed pace, and another to sleep in the desert. If you have more time, even better, because distances in Morocco are long, and the journey to the Sahara is quite long.

Is it better to sleep in the desert or in the village?

Sleeping in the desert is more immersive and scenic, while staying in town is more comfortable and simple. Many people combine both options.

Is the camel ride worth it?

It's a very typical and quite scenic experience, especially at sunset, although it can also feel a bit touristy and the camels look exhausted. If that doesn't appeal to you, there's always the option of going to the camp in a 4x4.

What is the climate like in the Sahara?

The climate is extreme. During the day it can be very hot, while at night temperatures drop considerably, especially in winter.

What is the best time to go?

Spring and autumn are usually the best times to visit, with more pleasant temperatures. Summer can be very hot, and winter nights are cold, although the desert has its charm at any time of year.

Is it very touristy?

Yes, Merzouga is one of the most popular gateways to the Sahara in Morocco, so there's quite a bit of tourist infrastructure. However, the natural environment remains stunning, and if you venture a little further afield or choose your experience wisely, it can still feel quite authentic.

Video in the Sahara Desert in Merzouga

Siempre tuve ganas de conocer el Sahara en Marruecos.
