As one of Morocco's imperial capitals, I imagined a city that would impress me from the very first moment. And it doesn't disappoint, as it's a true labyrinth where you'll get lost time and time again.

Endless alleyways and a constant feeling of exploring something ancient and alive at the same time. Without a doubt, that was what I enjoyed most about the city.

But there were several details that didn't quite convince me. For one thing, many of the historical sites can't be visited inside if you're not Muslim. I also felt the lack of open spaces within the medina, something I did find in other cities like Marrakech, places to sit, have a coffee, or simply get some fresh air.

Added to that are other factors, such as the strong smell in certain areas, especially near the tannery, an experience with street food that didn't agree with me (I'll elaborate on that below), and a feeling of insecurity when walking through the medina at night, which I'll also explain in detail.

All in all, it was several small things that left me with a less than ideal impression of Fez. It's a city with a rich history, but its present state didn't quite leave me with a positive feeling.

This post is part of the itinerary I put together to travel Morocco in 3 or 4 weeks.

How to get to Fez from different cities in Morocco (and from abroad)

Fez, in addition to being one of Morocco's four imperial cities, is very well connected by train and road to the country's main cities.

From Marrakech

There are comfortable trains that take between 6 and 8 hours. See schedules and prices at ONCF. It's worth it, but only if you know what kind of experience to expect.

What is the medina of Fez like?

The medina of Fez is enormous and functions like a true labyrinth. It's full of alleyways, markets, workshops, and local life. Getting lost is part of the city's charm, although it's advisable to have an offline map or GPS to help you find your way.

What shouldn't I miss in Fez?

The essential thing to do is to get lost in the medina without a fixed destination; that's where you truly feel the essence of the city. It's also worth visiting a tannery to see one of the most characteristic traditional processes, exploring a madrasa that allows access, and finding a viewpoint for a panoramic view of the labyrinthine Fez from above.

Is it possible to visit the tanneries without a guide?

Yes, you can go to the Chouara Tannery on your own, but it's not always straightforward. Often, access is through shop terraces, where they expect you to look (or buy) something in exchange for the view. It's also common for people to try to informally "guide" you through the medina to get there. With GPS, you can get there independently, but you need patience and know how to navigate these situations.

Is Fez safe?

Generally, yes, although it can feel a bit more chaotic within the medina. During the day it's very busy and easier to explore, but at night it's best to be more cautious.

Where is the best place to stay?

The best option is to stay within the medina in a traditional riad for the full experience. There are also options outside the medina if you prefer something quieter and more accessible.

What is the food like in Fez?

Fez has a very interesting culinary scene, with traditional Moroccan dishes. However, it's advisable to be cautious with street food, especially if you're not used to it, as it can be upsetting.

What is the best time to go?

Spring and autumn are usually the best seasons, with pleasant temperatures. Summer can be very hot and winter nights are cold, although the city can be visited year-round.

Some video captures from Fez

Llegué a Fez con expectativas muy altas.
