Unlike the capital, which is known for its modernity, otaku culture, and the vibe of a large metropolis, <strong>Kyoto<\/strong> It&#039;s the spiritual and cultural heart of Japan. A city where the past and present coexist in perfect harmony. class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I arrived early in the morning after traveling for several hours on an overnight bus from Kanazawa. Traveling by bus in Japan is usually a cheaper, though longer, alternative to taking the Shinkansen trains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For that stretch, I opted for the bus because not only was there a significant price difference compared to the train, but sleeping on the bus also saved me a night&#039;s accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the start, I noticed a different aura about the city. While it's not free, it helps you get your bearings quickly, you learn history and anecdotes from a local guide, and you can meet other travelers along the way. For me, it&#039;s the heart of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/japon_blog25.jpg\" alt=\"Calle Sanneizaka con la Pagoda de Kioto\" class=\"wp-image-3847\" style=\"width:521px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/japon_blog25.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/japon_blog25-1152x1536.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gion and the Pagoda in Kyoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">To get to Gion from the west side of the Kamo River, you have to <strong>cross the Shijo Bridge<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/LXw5uxqWzG6CeEWv8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see location on the map<\/a>). Once you do, you'll see numerous restaurants along the riverbank, with people chatting, strolling, or having a drink. It's a popular area for young people to meet up and enjoy the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/blog_kioto00.jpg\" alt=\"Orillas del Rio Kome en Kioto\" class=\"wp-image-13279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/blog_kioto00.jpg 800w, https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/blog_kioto00-533x400.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Banks of the Kome River in Kyoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>On the other side of the bridge, past the theater (which looks very beautiful at night), a significant change in the city&#039;s architecture and streets begins to emerge. This is where the Gion District begins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see many Japanese people dressed in traditional clothing from ancient Japan, especially women, who love to dress like Geisha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walking through these picturesque alleys, I come across wooden houses, candy craft shops, cafes, restaurants, tea shops, temples, pagodas, and people, lots of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Following the main thoroughfare, I come across an iconic spot in Gion: Sanneizaka Street. It is a pedestrian street on a hill with a Pagoda in the background (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/6hGJdBcMqvBg82px8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see on the map<\/a>). If we wanted, we could even follow the trail and leave the grounds through another entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Templo_Nanzenji\"><\/span>Nanzenji Temple<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a Buddhist temple and monastic complex in Kyoto. The path follows the course of a shallow irrigation canal.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/blog_kioto10-600x800.jpg\" alt=\"Camino del Filosofo en Kioto\" class=\"wp-image-13289\" style=\"width:550px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/blog_kioto10-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/blog_kioto10-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/elprismadefer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/blog_kioto10.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Philosopher&#039;s Path in Kyoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The route was named after two 20th-century Japanese philosophers and professors at Kyoto University, who are believed to have used it daily for exercise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trail passes several temples and shrines and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete the entire walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the northern end of the path there are good views of nearby Daimonji. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Arashiyama_y_el_bosque_de_bambu\"><\/span>Arashiyama and the bamboo forest<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Heading northwest of Kyoto, we find one of the areas I liked most in the city, along with Gion. Unlike the traditional district, Arashiyama has a quieter atmosphere and is surrounded by nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Arashiyama is the famous bamboo forest. You&#039;ve probably seen it in hundreds of photos. After 12 a.m., it&#039;s already packed with people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The climb to the upper shrine takes about two hours round trip. It has several viewing platforms, with spectacular views of Kyoto. It was later transformed into a Zen temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This temple is unique in that it&#039;s covered in gold leaf, which reflects on a lake. It&#039;s iconic and always packed with people. I didn&#039;t visit it, but they say it&#039;s worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ceremonia_del_te_en_Kioto\"><\/span>Tea ceremony in Kyoto<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Participating in a tea ceremony is one of the most traditional cultural experiences you can have in Kyoto. He <strong>bamboo forest<\/strong>, climb hills, and hike the surrounding trails. Walk along the riverbank, the bridge, and the local streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At night I go to visit the Gion district, and I find it not so crowded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dia_3\"><\/span>Day 3<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I start early going to the <strong>the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shinto Shrine (The Thousand Towers)<\/strong>Then I walk back and visit the <strong>Toji Pagoda<\/strong>, <strong>K\u014dsh\u014d-ji Temple<\/strong>, and other temples <strong>on the way to Gion district<\/strong>. This time I walk through the neighborhood more thoroughly, street by street, going to the <strong>Kiyomizu-dera Temple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dia_4\"><\/span>Day 4<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This day I dedicated largely to <strong>trek between Kurama and Kibune<\/strong>.
